The results of separate waste collection achieved in municipalities with door-to-door (PaP) service are generally superior to other mechanisms, both in terms of the quantity collected and the quality of the separation (generally between 60% and 80% separate collection). Based on this premise, more than one hundred people participated in the symposium organized by the Pedreguer City Council and FOVASA, They have organized to delve deeper into this highly efficient waste management model.
Vicent Garcia, head of environmental services management at Fovasa In Pedreguer, together with Ferran Lloret, spokesperson for the town council and 2nd deputy mayor, he gave a presentation focused on the success of the service in this municipality.
In this regard, Garcia highlighted that “the results speak for themselves: the organic fraction now accounts for more than 40% of the waste collected separately, increasing exponentially month after month since its implementation. Furthermore, the residual waste fraction is below 20%, very close to the parameters required by the European Union. Overall, all fractions, except for the residual waste, have seen their percentages increase with this fully personalized collection system.”
Furthermore, it has been shown that the door-to-door service is not only suitable for sparsely populated areas but also for larger cities where it can be managed, for example, through the collection of communal containers in multi-family dwellings. Another aspect that gained importance during the conference is that this model allows for the identification of the waste generator and therefore enables the implementation of fairer taxation systems.
Joan Piquer, Director General of Quality and Environmental Education, was in charge of closing a day in which representatives of the Banyeres de Mariola City Council and the Mancomunitat de la Ribera Alta participated to share their experience in the implementation of the Door-to-Door system and in which the status of the Association of Municipalities for Door-to-Door Collection was also presented.
