The mayor of Elda, Rubén Alfaro, accompanied by the councilor for Sustainable Public Services, José Antonio Amat, and the area director of FOBESA In Alicante, Miguel Ángel Sola has announced the data for the first quarter of implementation of the 'fifth container', intended for organic waste.
According to the town's mayor, the figures obtained by FOBESA, the company responsible for waste collection in the municipality, "demonstrate that the city of Elda is committed to the environment and confirm that the path we have taken is the right one."
The introduction of the brown bin has led to a restructuring of the waste collection service and the replacement of all recycling containers. Specifically, 40% more of these recycling containers have been installed in different neighborhoods and streets throughout the city, bringing the total to 170 recycling points.
In this regard, Rubén Alfaro explained that “the data shows that the recycling of lightweight packaging has increased by 70%, while that of paper and cardboard has also increased by 44%, a very significant amount.” In that sense, on behalf of the city council, through the Department of Sustainable Public Services, he expressed his gratitude to the residents of Elda for their involvement in recycling and separating their waste.
He also noted that, given that the implementation of the 'fifth container' was a novel service in the province, "we continue working with FOBESA to readjust the selective collection service and thus respond to the high levels of recycling demanded by citizens, which has meant an increase in the frequency with which these containers are emptied," since the truck makes daily collections of paper and cardboard, packaging and other waste from Monday to Saturday in different areas.
“We are firmly committed to making Elda a sustainable and environmentally friendly city,” added the mayor, who stressed that “the 2030 Agenda is the roadmap and the SDGs are its pillars, and actions like this one are in line with them.”
The mayor of Elda also announced the upcoming implementation of a door-to-door collection service for paper and cardboard in businesses that are part of the PAC and wish to join it, "so that the selective containers in the area are less saturated and residents can make normal use of them for their domestic needs."
Regarding the implementation of the brown container for organic waste, Miguel Ángel Sola, FOBESA's delegate in Alicante, explained that "the initial assessments carried out to verify whether the containers are being used correctly in different neighborhoods of the city are yielding very positive data in all the areas studied, which demonstrates the high level of awareness among citizens."
To reinforce the positive results of this campaign, FOBESA's environmental educators will continue visiting Elda's neighborhoods house by house to help the city's residents properly separate their waste, so that each item goes into the appropriate container.
